Nobody in the house could make a noise. There was this spotty young teenager with a mad look on his face, staring rapt at the radio: the “highly esteemed Goon Show” was being broadcast.
And in class at school there was an English kid who seemed to know all the scripts by heart—we thought he was the most amazing thing.
International Christmas Puddings were chased at recess and we all tried to outdo each other with our best Eccles.
